UNCW QUIDDITCH
Good Friends. Good Times. Great Memories.
Many people ask, "What is quidditch?"
Quidditch originally comes from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. It was adapted into a game suited for "muggles" or non-magic people in 2005 at Middlebury College in Vermont by Xander Manshel and Alex Benepe. Our UNCW team has been established since 2014 and have gone on to win the conference tournament in 2017. Quidditch is a combination of sorts of many sports. There are elements akin to handball, rugby, dodge-ball, basketball, and soccer. The players run on a broom (a PVC pipe) and use to quaffle to score through any of the three hoops.
The positions of quidditch are as follows:
Keeper
Chaser
Beater
Seeker
The keeper is the "goalie" position on the field and are denoted by a green headband. They are in charge of protecting the hoops from being scored in while on defense. On offence, the keeper acts like a fourth chaser and is able to score with the quaffle.
The chasers are the main offensive players on the field and are denoted by a white headband. They use the quaffle to score points for the team through the hoops. There are three on the field during play.
The beaters are more often than not defensive players on the field and are denoted by a black headband. Their main objective is to control the bludgers and provide protection for the chasers when scoring. Once hit with a bludger, the player must dismount from their broom and touch back in at their home hoops in order to resume playing.
The seeker is in charge of catching the snitch and is denoted by a yellow headband. Snitch play does not start until seventeen minutes into the game. The snitch is a person from a neutral party whose goal is to stop the seekers from grabbing the snitch (a tennis ball attached to their shorts) for as long as possible. Once the snitch is caught, the game is over.
Despite the "nerdy" reputation quidditch has, it is a full contact sport where players are allowed to tackle. UNCW's quidditch is one of two full contact club sports on the campus.
Overall, quidditch is not simple to explain in words; rather, it is something you must play to understand. Teamwork is key to a game's success, but above all our goal is to allow for the players to have fun in a welcoming and accepting environment.
